The national media has continued to show the “Doom and Gloom” with our national economy. However, when it comes to Peoria, we are not being faced with the same harsh outlook. Take a look at the information below, and you will see why it’s great to live in the Peoria area:
-
Peoria – Boom Town, On 11/27/08, Central Illinois received national media attention for showing signs of prosperity during this tough economic time. Check out the news video at: http://www.peoriachamber.org/goto/PeoriaNationalNews
- Local economic information specific to Peoria:
- Unlike the 80s, we are diversified and some of those new sectors do well in a down economy.
- Housing has not fallen apart like in the 80s and agri-business is at a much higher productivity level compared to the 80s
- Peoria had a banner year in 2007 with manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare having their best years in a long time – this trifecta gave us a safety net for times like this.
- Retail sales maybe down nationally, but “Black Friday” sales were up 3-5% compared to this time last year
- We have less housing inventory in 2008 than we did in 2007. Most areas are seeing an increase, where we saw a decrease.
- We have fewer foreclosures in 2008 than in 2007.
- 80% of our population stated they are not behind in their payments and do not foresee them getting behind in their payments.
- 96% of the homes that are priced right are selling
